Trump "cashed in" on 9/11 attack
Hillary Clinton’s campaign built a program around her record on night
two of the Democratic National Convention. This didn’t mean a break
from attacks on Donald Trump.
"Where was Donald Trump in the days,
and months, and years after 9/11? He didn't stand at the Pile. He
didn't lobby Congress for help. He didn't fight for the first
responders. Nope. He cashed in. Collecting $150,000 in federal funds
intended to help small businesses recover — even though days after the
attack Trump said his properties were not affected,” New York
Congressman Joe Crowley said.
This is MISLEADING.
It’s TRUE that one of Trump’s companies received a $150,000 grant, but there was nothing improper about it.
While
Trump’s business made more money than the federal definition of a small
business, the state of New York defined it differently in Manhattan.
According to a report on the program for
the state of New York, the state decided a business with fewer than 500
employees qualified as a small business for this grant.
Even
though Trump’s building at 40 Wall Street wasn’t physically damaged, the
grant was intended to help offset the broader economic damage to the
area around the World Trade Center, not to rebuild damaged buildings.
If a business owner wanted to keep operating below 14th street in Manhattan, they qualified for this grant.
The state gave out $556 million of these grants to a variety of businesses, including businesses that made a lot of money.
Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright took attacks on Trump to a global level:
“When asked about Putin, Donald Trump said – and I quote – ‘in terms of leadership, he's getting an ‘A.’’”
This is TRUE.
Trump said this in an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News while talking about Putin’s role in Syria and trying to draw contrast with President Obama.
That
doesn't mean that the argument Albright made about Trump seeming too
cozy with Putin for her liking is true, but the foundation she laid does
check out.
